Sport Waikato has called for a cultural reset after a series of sideline abuse incidents raised concern about the impact of adult behaviour on young players and officials.
The concern follows reports of verbal abuse and physical altercations around junior sport. Local leaders say the behaviour risks pushing young people away from sport.
The message is simple: junior sport is for children, and adults who cannot manage themselves are putting the future of community sport at risk.
Clubs and codes are now being asked to back referees and volunteers more visibly, and to enforce codes of conduct.
The key question is whether the message lands before more young officials walk away from the game.
