Summer markets and community events are helping bring people together across Ōtautahi this January.
Markets are a major part of Christchurch's weekend culture. They offer food, produce, second-hand goods, handmade items, plants, clothing, entertainment, and a social reason to get out of the house.
Riccarton Market is one of the city's largest regular markets, with more than 200 stalls and a wide range of goods, including fresh fruit and vegetables, furniture, clothing, art, plants, food, and beverages.
The Christchurch Farmers' Market at Riccarton House & Bush offers a different style of market experience, focused on fresh, local, and seasonal food in a heritage setting.
Community events also play an important role during the school holidays. Pool parties, library activities, local sport, outdoor recreation, and neighbourhood gatherings give families options that do not need to be expensive or complicated.
For stallholders and small businesses, summer markets are a chance to meet customers face to face. For residents, they are an easy way to support local.
In January, Christchurch's community calendar shows that good events do not always need to be big — they just need to bring people out.
