January brought cooler-than-average conditions to parts of Canterbury, according to NIWA's monthly climate summary.
NIWA reported that below-average temperatures occurred in northern Canterbury and a small portion of mid-Canterbury, while near-average temperatures were recorded elsewhere. The cooler conditions were part of a wider pattern that also affected interior Otago and northern Southland.
For Christchurch residents, January weather can feel highly changeable. A warm morning can turn into a cooler afternoon, while coastal breezes, nor'west conditions, and cloud cover can quickly alter outdoor plans.
The month is usually associated with beach trips, barbecues, gardening, sport, and school holiday activities, but Canterbury's climate often brings variety rather than guaranteed heat.
For gardeners, cooler spells can be helpful if they reduce heat stress, but dry periods still require attention to watering. For families, the key is planning around conditions rather than assuming every January day will behave the same.
As summer continues, residents should keep an eye on updated forecasts, especially before travel, outdoor events, or longer trips around the region.
In Canterbury, January rarely offers just one kind of summer weather — and 2026 was no exception.
