Few cities in New Zealand offer the range of short-trip options that Christchurch does. Within roughly two hours' drive, residents can be in alpine villages, harbour towns, hot pools or wide braided river country.
Hanmer Springs, about ninety minutes north, remains the classic weekend pick for hot pools and easy walks. The drive through the Lewis Pass beyond Hanmer is one of the more scenic options for those continuing on.
Akaroa and Banks Peninsula, just over an hour and a half east, offer harbour cruises, French-influenced food and a full network of bays to explore. The Summit Road loop is well worth the time even as a day trip.
Inland, Methven and the Mt Hutt area are best known for skiing in winter but offer excellent walking, mountain biking and stargazing through the warmer months. Lake Coleridge is a quieter alternative for a long lunch and a drive home via the Rakaia Gorge.
