Christchurch runners are beginning to build their training routines ahead of the Christchurch Marathon later in the year.

January is a common reset month for people setting fitness goals, and for many local runners, the marathon provides a clear target. Whether they are training for the full marathon, half marathon, 10km, or simply returning to regular running, the start of the year offers a chance to build consistency.

Christchurch is well suited to running, with Hagley Park, the Avon River, the Port Hills, Bottle Lake Forest, and coastal routes all offering different training options.

For beginners, the advice is usually simple: start gradually, build weekly distance slowly, and focus on staying injury-free. For experienced runners, January can be about creating a structured plan, adding strength work, and making the most of longer daylight hours.

Running also brings a strong community element. Local clubs, social running groups, park-based sessions, and weekend long runs help people stay motivated.

As the city moves through summer, more runners are likely to be seen on paths and parks across Christchurch.

The marathon may still be months away, but for many locals, the preparation begins now.
