For locals who have ticked off the obvious destinations, Canterbury still has plenty of road trip options worth a fresh look. Several classic loops remain achievable in a long weekend, with quieter back roads rewarding those willing to slow down.

The Inland Scenic Route via Methven, Mt Somers and Geraldine offers a slower alternative to State Highway 1, taking in foothills, river valleys and several solid lunch stops. Combined with a return via Rakaia Gorge, it makes an easy two-day trip.

Further south, the Mackenzie Basin remains a favourite for stargazing, with Tekapo and the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve drawing visitors year round. Off-peak shoulder season visits avoid the summer crowds at Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook Village.

Closer to home, the Banks Peninsula Summit Road loop and the Port Hills traverse remain the most accessible scenic drives for an afternoon out. Both reward fine weather and a relaxed pace.
