Hospitality and tourism operators across Canterbury say forward bookings for November through February are tracking ahead of last summer, with international visitor numbers continuing a slow but steady recovery.
ChristchurchNZ, the city's economic development agency, reported that guest nights in the region were up roughly seven per cent year-on-year over the most recent quarter. Operators in Akaroa, Hanmer Springs and the central city all told the Bulletin that weekend trade has been the strongest segment.
Retailers are more cautious. Several Cashel Street and Riccarton store managers said discretionary spending remains soft, with shoppers more deliberate about larger purchases. Promotions and loyalty programmes are being leaned on more heavily than in previous years.
Wage and supplier cost pressures continue to be a headwind. The Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce has flagged staff retention, particularly in hospitality and trades, as the issue most often raised by members through 2025.
Despite those pressures, the overall mood among operators spoken to was cautiously optimistic. Several pointed to a packed event calendar — including the World Buskers Festival in January — as a likely boost for the central city.
