Hospitality operators across the central city, Riccarton and the Sumner waterfront are gearing up for what most expect to be a busy summer trading window, with the Christmas-to-Anniversary period historically delivering more than a quarter of annual revenue for many venues.
Recruitment remains the biggest pre-summer concern. Several owners told the Bulletin they had locked in seasonal staff earlier than in past years, partly to avoid the late-November scramble that hit the sector hard in 2023.
Suppliers report steady demand for outdoor furniture, awnings and heaters as venues lean further into al fresco dining. Council outdoor dining permits along Oxford Terrace, the Terrace and New Regent Street have been renewed for the season.
Diners can expect the usual rush around major events, with Christmas in the Park, the Electric Avenue music festival and the World Buskers Festival all driving peak nights. Bookings are already being recommended for Friday and Saturday service through January.
