Landscape designers across Christchurch say enquiries typically lift sharply through October and November as homeowners look to get outdoor spaces ready for summer. This year has been no exception.

Popular requests include drought-tolerant native planting, raised vegetable beds, and outdoor entertaining areas with built-in seating. Designers said pergolas and shade structures have grown in demand as summers have become noticeably warmer and drier.

Smaller-scale projects also remain popular. Container gardens, espaliered fruit trees and modest courtyard makeovers are achievable for renters and homeowners on tighter budgets.

Local nurseries including Intaba's, Oderings and Southern Woods report steady weekend traffic, with edible plants and natives among the strongest categories.
