North Canterbury Musicals has opened Little Shop of Horrors at Rangiora Town Hall, giving the wider Christchurch theatre scene a school-holiday reminder of how much energy sits outside the central-city stage circuit.
The production runs from 9 to 17 October and brings the cult musical's mix of comedy, live music, puppet work and offbeat horror to a local audience that does not have to travel into Christchurch for a full evening of musical theatre.
Coverage of opening night singled out Jono Cartmell's Orin Scrivello, Oscar Days as the voice of Audrey II, McKenzie Gardner as Audrey, Josh Hogarty as Seymour, Benjamin Maher as Mr Mushnik and Ella Berry, Yeiji Kim and Jenny Wang in the trio.
The details matter because community theatre is often judged only by ticket sales or nostalgia. This production appears to be doing the harder thing: giving performers, musicians, puppeteers and technical crews a show that depends on timing, voice, humour and handmade stagecraft all working together.
Rangiora Town Hall is also part of the story. North Canterbury audiences have grown used to major events flowing into Christchurch, but a run like this lets the region keep its own cultural gravity for a week.
The production is not being presented as flawless. Opening-night reports noted some technical bumps and a band that could have been louder, which is a normal part of a live show finding its feet.
What matters for the rest of the run is whether the promise of opening night carries through. If it does, Little Shop of Horrors should give families, theatre regulars and occasional ticket-buyers a bright reason to keep local performance on the calendar.
