Halswell and the Selwyn district township of Rolleston remain among the fastest-growing areas in New Zealand, according to the most recent Stats NZ subnational population estimates. Selwyn has now overtaken Queenstown-Lakes as the country's fastest-growing district by percentage.

The growth is putting steady pressure on schools, roading and three waters infrastructure. Both Christchurch City Council and Selwyn District Council have signalled significant capital programmes through their long-term plans, with co-funded projects increasingly common at the boundary.

Waka Kotahi's planning for the Christchurch Southern Motorway corridor and ongoing improvements to State Highway 1 reflect the regional pull these communities now exert. Commuter flows from Rolleston, Lincoln and West Melton into central Christchurch have grown substantially since 2018.

Developers active in the area say buyer demand has shifted towards smaller-format sections and townhouses, particularly within walking distance of town centres and primary schools. New build consents in Selwyn have continued to outpace most other districts nationally.
