The University of Canterbury has launched Research Connect, a new online portal intended to make it easier for organisations, communities and partners to find the university's expertise, facilities and innovation capability.
The portal gives industry, government, Maori, nonprofit organisations and community groups a single entry point for engaging with UC researchers, accessing specialist facilities, exploring consultancy opportunities and developing collaborative projects.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation Professor Lucy Johnston said the portal was designed to make research expertise more visible and accessible to people and organisations that can apply new knowledge to real-world challenges.
For Christchurch, the launch is a practical business and community story. The city has spent years positioning itself around technology, health, engineering, climate resilience, aerospace and applied research. A clearer front door could make that capacity easier for local operators to use.
The strongest use case is likely to be the group that knows it has a problem but does not know which lab, researcher or facility could help. A manufacturer, nonprofit, council team or start-up may not have time to navigate university structures from the outside.
Research Connect is meant to shorten that distance by helping potential partners discover capability, identify opportunities for collaboration and begin conversations earlier in a project's life.
That matters because university research often becomes most valuable when it leaves the campus boundary. The local payoff will depend on whether the portal leads to more projects that solve practical problems, create new ventures, improve services or give community organisations access to expertise they could not otherwise reach.
