Christchurch's founder story today is a small one by design: a breakfast table, an hour, and a local organiser asking people to practise thinking about the future before decisions become urgent.
Dr Cheryl Doig, founder of Think Beyond and the Otautahi Futures Collective, is hosting the 14 October What if Wednesday session at Beat Street Cafe in central Christchurch.
The monthly gathering is framed as an informal conversation for people interested in futures and foresight. This session uses the idea of reactance and weak signals as a starting point, asking what happens when people feel a freedom is threatened and what unintended consequences can follow.
Doig's work sits in the space between business leadership, education and civic imagination. The Humanitix listing describes her as a leadership futurist and connector, and notes that she is also connected with Aotearoa Futures and Oceania Futures.
That makes the event more than a networking slot. For small organisations, founders, educators and community groups, foresight can be a practical discipline: noticing early signals, testing assumptions and widening the room before strategy hardens.
The Christchurch angle is that this kind of capability is being built in ordinary places, not only conference halls. A cafe conversation will not solve the future, but it can help local operators get better at noticing it.
