Christchurch's café scene has continued to expand beyond the central city, with new openings clustering in suburban hubs such as Sydenham, Addington, Beckenham and Merivale through 2025.

Operators say a typical successful new café now leans on more than coffee alone — bakery programmes, all-day brunch menus and dedicated bean retail are now table stakes for many openings.

Wholesale roasters including Hummingbird, Switch, Vivace and C4 Coffee continue to anchor the local supply chain, with several Christchurch roasters also shipping nationally. Specialty bean sales for home brewing remain a growth category.
