An hour and a half from Christchurch, Akaroa continues to draw a steady stream of weekend visitors. The drive over the Summit Road is part of the experience, with viewpoints over Lyttelton, Governors Bay and the harbour itself.
Once in town, the main waterfront strip offers a tight cluster of cafés, galleries and harbour cruises. The Black Cat Cruises wildlife tour remains the best-known way to see Hector's dolphins, with sailings most days through summer.
Beyond the township, the surrounding bays — Le Bons, Okains, Pigeon and Little Akaloa — each offer their own pace. The Banks Peninsula Track and shorter day walks from the Hilltop are popular options for those wanting to stretch their legs.
Those staying overnight should book ahead through summer, particularly on long weekends. The Akaroa Information Centre maintains an up-to-date listing of accommodation and current operator schedules.
