Canterbury Water Polo's major raffle closed on Friday night, but the campaign is really a window into the rising cost of keeping community sport accessible in Christchurch.
The club raffled a new Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid worth $32,990 plus on-road costs, with the wider prize package valued at more than $35,000. Ticket sales closed at 10pm on Friday, with the draw scheduled for 16 October at Blackwells City Showroom.
Board member and fundraising lead Brittany Tucker said the club had to look for new ways to support players and programmes as traditional grant funding became harder to secure.
The biggest pressure point is pool hire. The club says its annual pool-hire costs have increased by more than 46 percent since 2023, with projected 2026 costs now above $182,000.
That figure is the reason this story matters beyond the chance to win a car. Parakiore gives Christchurch a world-class aquatic facility, but the community-sport test is whether young athletes can afford regular access to the water.
The fundraiser is intended to support junior and youth player development, subsidies for national and international competitions, coaching and referee development, pool hire, equipment, uniforms and representative team travel.
The club's partnership with Blackwells grew from a practical idea raised around an under-14 national tournament, helped by the discovery that Blackwells chief executive Steve Grenfell had previously played water polo for Canterbury. That local connection gives the raffle a community-builder angle, not just a prize-board hook.
